Biotech is a rapidly growing market in which healthcare products are always in demand.

I am from a 3rd world country, Zimbabwe, and am currently studying at the University of Manchester. Medical equipment readily available in 1st world countries is not easily accessible or is too expensive and therefore patients go to countries like South Africa to get treated.

Since I am from Zimbabwe, I have local knowledge and my family is business oriented, in a different field though. I can use my technical knowledge from engineering and business knowledge from working with my dad to startup a business in Zimbabwe and then expand it to other parts of Africa in which I supply medical equipment, install it and then provide regular maintenance.

Originally from the UK, I received my PhD from Edinburgh University studying chromatin structure in Robin Allshire's laboratory before moving to Stanford to enjoy the Californian weather as a postdoc in the Biochemistry department.

My current research in Aaron Straight's laboratory studies the regulation of protein networks at the centromeric region of chromosomes. This work aims to better understand how cells become cancerous by identifying how key centromeric protein complexes interact and are regulated to prevent chromosome mis-segregation - the most common hallmark of human solid tumor cells.

As well as using molecular cloning and mammalian tissue culture techniques, my work specializes in the use of single molecule imaging, protein production / purification, and mass spectrometry.

I have been trained in physics and I want to get into biotech - intriguing! Well, it's always pleasure to do physics, but what brings a little more pleasure and a sense of pride is - "This is what I have built-up using physics and yes, it can solve your problems". Exactly, this is the reason I want to get into entrepreneurship. Biotech attracts me because this is one way of making science reach to the masses and for a good reason.

I have specialised in optics and have been working on it for around 8 years now. I have fairly good understanding of optics and use of light as a probe. Last year, we (I and two of my teammates) have come up with a design (algorithm is in the test phase), for a device that is expected to raise an early alarm in case of MI, commonly known as heart-attack.

I originally wanted to go to medical school. I kept getting distracted while going through my engineering program, but I am still very interested in medicine. I came to the realization that I needed to combine the two interests and now that is what drives me. I am working on a number of medical innovations that will hopefully help many in the years to come. The thing that I am most passionate about right now is my own personal project to significantly improve the dialysis process. Patients get sick and most cant wait long enough to get a transplant. My solution is to introduce a new material that will not only improve patient care length, but increase the quality of life while undergoing treatment.

During my Masters project, I have worked on stretchable electronic devices which I think has huge applications in human-machine interfaces.
