Co-founder hub
Overview

"OneStart is a colossal stimulus for university entrepreneurship at all levels from undergraduates to academic staff."

– Hagan Bayley, Co-founder of Oxford Nanopore

The OneStart Co-founder Hub gives you the chance to build your perfect team or join a biotech startup.

All teams are advised to browse this hub to complement their teams with co-founders. One of our judging criteria will be the breadth of expertise within your team.

If you do not have an idea of your own, but experience or skills that would be useful to a bio-entrepreneur, register now as a co-founder. Our goal is to link people with ideas with those who can help them realise it.

Send an email now to somebody below, and who knows, you might be picking up an oversized cheque with them in May 2016.

Biotech is a rapidly growing market in which healthcare products are always in demand.

I am from a 3rd world country, Zimbabwe, and am currently studying at the University of Manchester. Medical equipment readily available in 1st world countries is not easily accessible or is too expensive and therefore patients go to countries like South Africa to get treated.

Since I am from Zimbabwe, I have local knowledge and my family is business oriented, in a different field though. I can use my technical knowledge from engineering and business knowledge from working with my dad to startup a business in Zimbabwe and then expand it to other parts of Africa in which I supply medical equipment, install it and then provide regular maintenance.

I originally wanted to go to medical school. I kept getting distracted while going through my engineering program, but I am still very interested in medicine. I came to the realization that I needed to combine the two interests and now that is what drives me. I am working on a number of medical innovations that will hopefully help many in the years to come. The thing that I am most passionate about right now is my own personal project to significantly improve the dialysis process. Patients get sick and most cant wait long enough to get a transplant. My solution is to introduce a new material that will not only improve patient care length, but increase the quality of life while undergoing treatment.

I got infected with the biotech virus when I started a team for iGEM 2010 and I never looked back. I am highly interdisciplinary and probably could even help you out in the wet lab when in a real pinch, but you will make the best use of my skills by letting me work on the business plan/market analysis.

Experience:
- Several internships at technology startups (marketing/business development)
- Wrote first business plan and/or market analysis for 3 science-based startups of leading research organizations (Max Planck, Helmholtz). Areas of research: robotics, cognitive training, cell-based assays.
- Internship at Max-Planck-Innovation, the TTO of the Max Planck Society

Academic Background: 3 years Physics (Chemistry Minor), 4 years Law, 4 years Business Administration (Chemistry Minor)

I have a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and I am interested in Biotech entrepreneurship in London. Alongside my PhD I attended courses relating to business development, negotiations and opportunity identification. Moreover, I am following a 3 month internship at WSF, an Accelerator, at which I am gaining hands-on experience on the early stages of a start-up and I am helping WSF set up a health acceleration program. My passion for science, interest in cutting edge research and hypothesis-driven approach to problem solving are a combination that would allow me to translate scientific innovation from ideas to commercial reality and is something which I want to further develop. I would welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss my interests and added value further.

I am a postdoc with 12 years of experience in research, mainly infectious disease. Research in academia does not motivate me anymore, because I do not see the impact of my work on people's lives. So, I started looking more into the biotech world and recently got very interested in the business side. Being part of a team of smart and passionate people, that want to change healthcare is in alignment with my career priorities. I also think it will be amazing to learn so many new things outside of research and be able to build something from scratch. I have been looking into jobs in start-ups because I like the mentality. So, why not start my own? I bring years of research experience, analytical and problem solving skills, communication skills and a passion for learning and collaborating.

I come from an interdisciplinary background, having completed training in the humanities and biological sciences. I currently work in a cGMP environment where we make translational medicine ("bench-to-bedside therapies") a reality. I am a strong multi-tasker with an acute awareness of deadlines. I am keen to connect with young entrepreneurs who seek to change the way we do medicine and with an ultimate eye to improving human health. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me to discuss any opportunities.

I am interested in biotech entrepreneurship because I believe that biotechnology has the ability to shape the world and help people. According to the Biotechnology Industry Organization, biotechnology can heal the world, fuel the world, and feed the world. My technical skill is in analytical chemistry and designing experimental equipment to find fundamental information about systems, but I also bring along enthusiasm and teamwork skills.
