Co-founder hub
Overview

"OneStart is a colossal stimulus for university entrepreneurship at all levels from undergraduates to academic staff."

– Hagan Bayley, Co-founder of Oxford Nanopore

The OneStart Co-founder Hub gives you the chance to build your perfect team or join a biotech startup.

All teams are advised to browse this hub to complement their teams with co-founders. One of our judging criteria will be the breadth of expertise within your team.

If you do not have an idea of your own, but experience or skills that would be useful to a bio-entrepreneur, register now as a co-founder. Our goal is to link people with ideas with those who can help them realise it.

Send an email now to somebody below, and who knows, you might be picking up an oversized cheque with them in May 2016.

I have always been fascinated by how advanced technologies changed the world. As I learnt more about scientific research in graduate school, I realized that great technologies would not always lead to great products. I am interested in entrepreneurship because I believe it is the key to close the gap between advanced technologies and successful business. I am a chemist applying new technologies in biomedical applications, and have been working in both academia and industry on microarrays and microfluidic devices. In the meantime, I wrote research and business proposals, I was trained with Steve Blank’s startup philosophy, and I pitched business ideas in entrepreneurship competitions previously.

This is an incredibly exciting time to be involved in Biotech Entrepreneurship. Impressive advances are being continuously achieved as the field gradually transforms into Synthetic Biology. The possibilities to revolutionize science, technology, the economy and society are staggering.

I envision a future where efficient nanoscale engineering will transform cells and molecules into programmable microrobots and nanomachines that will operate multiple tasks within human cells and tissues.

As a senior genetics student with an in-depth expertise in Molecular & Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, experimental design, biostatistics, and exceptional interests in Machine Learning, Big Data, Computational Modelling and Evolutionary & Genetic Programming, I wish to take part in shaping the future.

I have a strong interest in biotech because I believe that its an essential part of the solution to some of the earth's problems. I think that a proactive approach is the only way to go, and that means getting up and getting on with it!

What I can bring to you is a wide range of abilities and knowledge in diverse areas.
- You want to study GM crops? I've got practical skills in genetics and bioinformatics.
- More interested in proteins and antibodies? I already have the lab skills in this area too.
- Want to do something in psychology? I've got a working knowledge of how drugs and psychiatric disorders interact.
- Need someone great with words? I've been blogging for years, and I know how to give a good presentation

I’m Kwan, a third year PhD student in biomedical science from Imperial College London. My project now is about the application of stem cells, besides, I have my Master degree in toxicology, from which I can provide some idea about the toxicity test. Since I’ve been working in academia for a while, I’m always interested in understanding how to put the finding in the lab into real market. So if you think I fit in your team, please feel free to contact me.

Having recently joined a BBSRC iCASE project which aims for students to gain both academic and industrial expertise as well as in my case, theoretical (metabolic modelling) and experimental techniques, I want to follow the direction of applying my skills for translating research into applications. Currently learning a wide swathe of skills including software engineering and metabolic engineering, and so I will be well placed in a project from its inception in planning and designing strain development as well as feasibility analysis.

Biotech is a rapidly growing market in which healthcare products are always in demand.

I am from a 3rd world country, Zimbabwe, and am currently studying at the University of Manchester. Medical equipment readily available in 1st world countries is not easily accessible or is too expensive and therefore patients go to countries like South Africa to get treated.

Since I am from Zimbabwe, I have local knowledge and my family is business oriented, in a different field though. I can use my technical knowledge from engineering and business knowledge from working with my dad to startup a business in Zimbabwe and then expand it to other parts of Africa in which I supply medical equipment, install it and then provide regular maintenance.

I had my master degree in Material Engineering in UCD, Ireland. I see the biotech area as the key to solve many different human health problems in the future, which will get more serious and will greatly influence the living quality of people everywhere.

Currently, I’m the Co founder of a startup biotechnology company called Ourobotics from 2015, I have been involved in startup competitions in China. Recently we came second in 'Changshu-Ireland Startup Competition’.

During my time at UCD, I have gained knowledge in material, mechanical, business and marketing and really want to put those skills into use.

For the past few years I have had a continuous flow of motivation to learn. I graduated with a degree in Biology from USA then I returned to my home country Egypt and studied Medicine. Throughout my medical studies I prepared myself for Neuroscience research by obtaining training in multiple institutions in USA and Europe. Then I did a European Masters in Neuroscience at top universities in Germany and Netherlands. I am interested in being part of a start up focusing on Neurodegenerative diseases and I believe I have a very strong background to allow me to be of benefit. I'm independent yet enjoy being part of a team. I am aware of all aspects of Neurodegenerative diseases from molecular to clinical including what patients experience. Research, for me, is more than a career, it's a cause.

I believe that any idea, no matter how simple that can help diagnose, treat, evaluate treatments or simply reduce symptoms of a disease should be granted a chance to be translated into a usable technology or product to improve patient outcomes. I believe that biotech entrepreneurship is the means to achieving this.
I bring extensive technical skills in software and firmware development, investigative and research skills including the ability to design, analyzed and evaluate outcomes of experiments. I also bring communication skills, public speaking and technical writing allowing me to share knowledge with both scientific and consumer communities. Finally, I bring the passion and ambition to make a difference along with it comes the hard work, problem solving and dedication.
